ENG. Last week I decided to immerse myself into the men's world and therefore started reading men's magazines such as Men’s Health, Esquire and GQ! I had always been curious about the type of articles they have. To make the story short, I ended up going to bed like at 2 am due to all the interesting articles I found! Let's say now I am a fan! During that reading session I ran across an interesting GQ article about barber shops and how to choose a good barber. Then it crossed my mind that I really didn’t know a lot of friends who actually go to a barber! I started to ask all of my guy friends and family and basically the answers were: “no, I have never been to one," or "no, I really don’t like the hygiene in those places, it scares me, I am German I do it myself," or "I used to go but then I moved to Russia and I had to learn to do it myself.” In all cases the answer was negative, but I was still curious because I remember that when I was a kid my brother and cousins used to go to the barber and I knew they did not only do it to get their haircut, but it was also a time for male bonding between fathers and sons in my family. For that reason, I decided to investigate a bit more about the subject.
The golden age of the Barber Shops was between 1880 and the 1940’s. Barber shops were a place for men to go get a great haircut and shave, as well as fraternize with other men. During this golden age the barber shops were very elegant and luxurious , they were also a way to show status. The decline of the barber shop started with the Great Depression, when people started cutting back on “unnecessary” expenses. Then, with the changes of styles, and as the hippie culture began to dominate, men started to grow their hair longer, so there was no need of a barber. In the 1980’s, when short hair came back in fashion, not all men went back to barber shops since they started to prefer unisex salons and new developments such as the disposable razors.
But while I was investigating, I found another reason why specifically black men used to go to barber shops between the 1950’s and 1960’s. Back in that time, there weren’t many areas where black men could gather and express their voice (especially in the US). Therefore, the barber shop -along with the Church- became the place where black men could gather and fraternize. A barber shop was a place where black men could feel safe to express themselves and have real conversations about their situation, politics, religion, and sports. So all of a sudden it hit me, I understood why I felt a barber shop had such a profound meaning within my family. And it just gave a whole new meaning to this beautiful place.
So even though the tradition and popularity has been lost through the years and it may not have the same significance today, I do think going to a barber shop is a cool vintage thing for men to do! I believe any fashionable man with an interesting lifestyle should have a barber or should try to go to a barber once! So, if you don't have a barber yet, here is GQ’s advice on how to choose one:
"He should, first of all, be a he. Sorry—nice as it would be to have a woman patting your scalp while you sit bare-chested under a nylon kimono, it's got to be a guy.
"Clientele is critical. If most of a shop's customers look like Trent Lott or Dennis Hastert, chances are it's not the place to go for the latest take on the faux-hawk.
"When you do walk into a shop, check out its products. While expensive gels don't guarantee a good haircut, cheapo supermarket stuff usually means a cheapo Supercuts look is in store for you.
"Beware of a barber who relies too much on electric clippers. Your haircut should have depth and dimension, and these can be achieved only through the use of scissors.
"Think of it as a date. You need some talk before you get to the body contact. Let your barber know what you want. If he listens and relates to you sensibly, chances are he has the skills to back up the talk." extracted from GQ article How to choose a Barber.
ESP. La semana pasada me sumergí en un mundo de hombres, y por esa razón estuve leyendo revistas para hombres como Men’s Health, Esquire y GQ. Siempre tuve curiosidad de saber qué tipo de artículos salen en esas revistas y decidí explorarlos un poco. Para hacer la historia corta, termine acostándome como a las 2 de la mañana por todos los artículos interesantes que leí. Durante esta inmersión encontré un artículo que me llamó la atención sobre los barberos y las peluquerías de caballeros. Empecé a pensar que no conocía a ningún amigo mío que fuera a un barbero y por eso mismo empecé a preguntar entre ellos si habían estado algún día en una barbería. Las respuestas fueron muy similares: "no, nunca he ido a uno," o "me asusta que el sitio no sea higiénico," o "soy alemán hago esas cosas yo mismo," o "solía ir pero cuando me mudé a Rusia tuve que aprender a hacerlo yo mismo." En todos los casos la respuesta fue negativa, pero yo todavía tenía curiosidad porque me acordaba que cuando era pequeña mi hermano y mis primos siempre solían ir al barbero, y sabía que ellos no sólo iban para que les cortaran el cabello si no porque era un modo de conectarse entre padres e hijos. Por esa razón decidí investigar más sobre el tema.
Los años dorados de los barberos y de las peluquerías sólo para hombres fueren entre 1880 y 1940. Las barberías o peluquerías para hombres eran lugares en los cuales los hombres podían lograr un fantástico corte de cabello y rasurarse bien la barba, pero aparte de esto eran lugares donde ellos podían fraternizar. Durante esta época dorada las peluquerías para hombres eran lujosas, elegantes y representaban estatus. Las peluquerías para hombres empezaron a disminuir después de la Gran Depresión cuando los hombres empezaron a reducir sus gastos en cosas “innecesarias”. Después, con los nuevos estilos de vida de los hippies y el hecho que los hombres decidieran dejarse crecer la barba y el cabello, no había necesidad de ir a un barbero. En los años 80 cuando el cabello corto volvió a estar de moda, no muchos hombres volvieron al barbero ya que preferían ir a una peluquería unisex o utilizar las rasuradoras desechables.
Mientras investigaba sobre los barberos encontré algo muy interesante: la razón por la cual las peluquerías para hombres eran tan importantes para los hombres de raza negra en los años 50 y 60. En ese tiempo los hombres de raza negra no tenían muchos lugares donde se podían reunir para expresarse libremente (especialmente en Estados Unidos). Por esa razón las peluquerías de hombres, junto con las Iglesias, eran lugares donde los hombres de raza negra podían fraternizar. Las peluquerías para hombres eran lugares donde los hombres de raza negra se podían sentir seguros para expresarse libremente y podían tener conversaciones reales sobre su situación, sobre política, religión, y deportes entre otros. Entonces en ese momento entendí porque yo sentía que las barberías eran importantes en mi familia. Y desde ese momento adquirieron un significado importante y profundo en mi vida.
Aunque la tradición y la popularidad se han perdido a lo largo de los años y puede que no tenga el mismo significado hoy en día, yo sí creo que para un hombre podría ser súper vintage pero cool ir a una barbería. Yo creo que cualquier hombre que tenga un estilo de vida interesante y que sea un hombre de moda debería tener un barbero ¡o al menos debería intentar ir una vez a la barbería! Entonces, si no tienes un barbero aquí están los consejos de GQ para saber bien cómo escoger uno:
Debe ser siempre un hombre.
La clientela de tu barbero es crítica y lo dice todo sobre su trabajo. ¡Obsérvalos!
Cuando entres al lugar fíjate bien qué tipo de productos tiene, geles caros no te garantizan que es un buen lugar pero al menos es mejor que una barata de supermercado.
No te fíes de un barbero que hace todo con una maquina eléctrica.
