ENG.As many of you already know, I work in the fashion industry as a fashion merchandiser manager. Many people wonder how I got to my position and have contacted me for advice or coaching. The general questions have been: how I got there, which schools I recommend for studying business and fashion, what are some of the careers the fashion industry has to offer, what I do in my job and how did I know I wanted to work in this business. For that reason, Juanita decided to create a series in her blog called Fashion Careers! She feels that working in the fashion business is not as difficult as it seems if you have the appropriate information of what career to pursue and how to get in. Juanita feels that the best way to get this information is through young people like her who have gone from the bottom to the top! In these series through research, personal experiences, anecdotes and interviews to young professionals in the industry I will provide you with insightful tips on how to pursue and international career in fashion. Choosing the right school Part 1.
Some people think that in fashion it is not necessary to study, and in some cases they might be right because you can start a career in retail at a very young age and you can build yourself up to the top. This is a great way to get to know the real business because no matter the format (mass market or luxury) the retail floor is where everything starts. However, there are some careers in the industry for which you definitely need higher education as well as professional experience. Therefore, it is extremely important for you to choose the school wisely. There are 3 criteria I found important in this decision: The Place, The Program+ Teachers of the school and The Study abroad and Internships programs offered by the school.
PLACE
For fashion, location is extremely important, not only in terms of having access to retail stores, but also for you as a new person in this industry. So, when you are looking for a university, institute or college to study fashion, location is a factor you should take into consideration. Why should location be important in your choice? For three basic reasons: General Cultural Enrichment, Networking and seeking job opportunities.
General Cultural Enrichment
In fashion you need to be where everything is happening because as I always say: fashion is inspired by life. That is why it's important to be part not only of the events in the fashion industry but also of the different things going on in the arena of design, music and culture in general. People in the fashion industry need to be informed about everything because fashion is extremely connected with the arts and with global affairs. Designers get inspired by a Monet painting or have been part of the feminine Cultural Revolution with the mini skirt. Therefore as a future young manager in the Fashion industry you need to breathe culture and the best way to do it is to be part of it.
Networking
I have learned through my experience that one of the most important things in fashion is: the people you know. The people you know can always open doors anywhere. For me the best way to get to know these people in the fashion industry is to hang out where people in the industry go. Also, this allows you to create what I call “spontaneous networking”. Spontaneous networking is when you meet people you sincerely like and therefore you can exchange common interests and passions and, who knows, eventually become friends. I am not saying regular networking, when you go purposely to an industry event to exchange business cards, doesn’t work, but I have surely seen more magic with the spontaneous kind. I actually found my job at Valentino through a true friend who put me in contact with HR. People feel more comfortable to recommend you or open doors for you when they really know who you are.
Seeking Job Opportunities
If you want to work in fashion you need to be where the jobs are! Unless you already have big plans to create your own business you should always evaluate the choice of college thinking if in that area you will be able to find a job afterwards. It is always better to try to do this from the beginning because it gives you an opportunity to create a network from school and outside of it. Moving afterwards to a new city for a job is much harder, so make it easy for you and try to choose the right place way before you go.
So which are the places I recommend to look for schools?
FASHION CAPITALS OF THE WORLDS
Ideally, if you want to be part of the international world of fashion I definitely recommend you look for a school in a fashion capital of the world or at least of your country such as Milan, NYC, Sao Paulo, Shangai, Paris, London, Madrid, Medellin within others. The most important international companies are located there. Therefore, you will get more opportunities for jobs, cultural enrichment and networking. This is one of the reasons why for my master’s degree I chose Milan. Careerwise I had a lot of companies to choose from: Valentino, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Cavalli, Bottega Veneta, Moschino, Alberta Ferretti ect. Having options increases your possibility of finding a job.
CITIES WITH CULTURAL MOVEMENT
I strongly recommend you look for a city that offers you a wide cultural variety such as Bogota, Rome, Philadelphia and Madrid within others. As I mentioned before, culture is heavily connected to fashion so the more you are exposed to different ways of culture the better. You will be able to relate with people who already work in the fashion industry. Fashion is not only about a beautiful dress, itis also about the photographers, the arts, the streets, the music and the general culture like restaurants and places you hang out. Also, in cities like these they organize events related to fashion that cater to a specific part of the fashion industry or market such as the Bread and Butter in Berlin, the Cali Exposhow, or the Barcelona Bridal Week.
INTERNET BEST CHANNEL OF INFORMATION
If moving to a fashion capital or to a city with great cultural movement is definitely not an option don’t worry, because the INTERNET is the perfect solution for you! Nowadays you can get the best education you want within your house! I know this for a fact, since I teach online for Parsons School of Design. My students come from all over the world! I give them the chance to experience and learn what I do in fashion here in Milan and NYC without having to move to my cities (I will give more information about universities and courses like these in the 2nd part of these post). Also, the Internet has a great and enriching cultural offer...you can read magazines such as style.com, look for information on search engines like Google and Wikipedia, subscribe to different blogs in lifestyle, fashion, design ect. You can also start building up your network on twitter, facebook, asmallworld, linkedin, quora ect. The web has a lot to offer and it is up to you how much you take advantage of it.

Muchas personas se preguntan cómo llegue a esa posición y otras me han contactado para que les de consejos. Las preguntas generales han sido: ¿Cómo llegaste a tu posición, cuáles universidades les recomendaría, cuáles son algunas de las carreras que la industria de la moda tiene para ofrecer, qué hago en mi trabajo diariamente y cómo decidí que esta carrera era la ideal para mí? ¡Por esta razón, Juanita ha decidido crear una serie de artículos en su blog de Carreras en la moda! Ella cree que trabajar en la moda no es tan difícil como lo pitan si uno tiene la información necesaria para hacer una carrera en la moda. Escogiendo la Escuela Correcta Parte 1.
Algunas personas piensan que para estar en la industria de la moda no es necesario estudiar. En algunos casos esto es cierto ya que uno puede empezar una carrera como vendedor en una tienda y después escalará a la cima. Esto es un muy buen modo de conocer dónde se hace el negocio de verdad ya que no importa el formato (Mercado de lujo o masivo) es allí donde todo empieza. De todas maneras, hay algunas carreras en la industria para las cuales uno necesita una educación universitaria tanto como la experiencia. Por eso es realmente importante escoger sabiamente la Universidad, instituto o escuela en la cual inscribirse. Hay tres criterios que yo tendría en cuenta en esta decisión: El lugar, Los Programas + Profesores de la escuela y por último los Programas de intercambio y pasantías.
El LUGAR
En la moda, la ubicación es extremadamente importante no sólo para una tienda o boutique sino también para una joven persona que quiere entrar en el mundo de la moda. Por esta misma razón cuando estés buscando una Universidad, la ubicación es un factor que deberías tener en consideración. Para mí la ubicación es un punto importante por las siguientes tres razones: Enriquecimiento Cultural, establecer contactos y para mayores oportunidades de trabajo.
Enriquecimiento Cultural
En la moda uno tiene que estar donde todo sucede porque como yo siempre digo, la moda se inspira de la vida misma. Por eso mismo es importante participar no sólo en los diferentes eventos de la industria de la moda sino también en los de diseño, música y cultura en general. Las personas en la industria de la moda necesitan estar informados de todo, ya que la moda está extremamente conectada con el arte y con los asuntos globales. Los diseñadores se pueden inspirar de una pintura de Monet y han sido parte de una revolución femenina con la creación de la mini falda. Por estas mismas razones un joven que quiere entrar en la industria de la moda tiene que respirar cultura y la mejor forma de hacerlo es siendo parte de ella.
Establecer una red de contactos
He aprendido a través de mi experiencia que una de las cosas más importante en la moda es: las personas que conoces. Las personas que conoces siempre pueden abrir puertas en cualquier parte. Para mí la mejor forma de conocer gente en la moda es pasando tu tiempo donde la gente de la industria lo hace. Esto te permite establecer contactos espontáneos, el conocer personas que de verdad te agradan y compartir con ellas e intercambiar sueños y pasiones, y quien sabe, eventualmente volverse amigos. Yo no estoy diciendo que establecer contactos de la manera tradicional (yendo a un evento de la industria donde uno intercambia tarjetas de presentación) no funciona, sólo que he visto más magia actuar cuando las cosas se hacen espontáneamente. Por ejemplo, yo encontré mi trabajo en Valentino a través de un verdadero amigo que me puso en contacto con los de recursos humanos. La gente se siente más cómoda recomendándote cuando te conoce de verdad.
Mayores Oportunidades de Trabajo
Si te interesa trabajar en la moda tienes que estar donde está el trabajo. Al menos de que tengas grandes planes de crear tu propio negocio, cuando escojas tu universidad deberías ya considerar las oportunidades de trabajo que hay en la ciudad que escojas. Siempre es mejor tomar esta decisión desde el principio ya que te da la oportunidad de establecer una red de contactos dentro y fuera de la universidad. Mudarse después a otra ciudad es un poco más complicado, entonces: ¿por qué hacerte la vida difícil y no pensar en eso desde el principio?
¿Entonces cuáles son los lugares donde recomiendo buscar una escuela de moda?
Las Capitales de la Moda en el Mundo
Idealmente si quieres ser parte de la moda internacional te recomiendo mudarte a una de las capitales de la moda del mundo como: Milán, NYC, Sao Paulo, Shanghái, Paris, Londres, Madrid, Medellín entre otras. Las más importantes empresas de la moda están ubicadas allí y así podrías obtener más opciones de trabajos, enriquecimiento cultural y de establecer una red de contactos. Esta es una de las razones por las que escogí Milán para hacer mi maestría. En Milán hay muchas oportunidades de trabajo ya que hay varias compañías como: Valentino, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Cavalli, Bottega Veneta, Moschino, Alberta Ferretti ect. El tener opciones aumenta tus posibilidades de encontrar un trabajo.
Ciudades con movimiento cultural
Es súper importante buscar una ciudad que te pueda ofrecer una amplia variedad de cultura como Bogotá, Roma, Filadelfia o Antwerp entre otras. Como he mencionado antes, la cultura está altamente conectada con la moda, entonces entre más te expones será aun más fácil poderte comunicar y relacionarte con las diferentes personas que trabajan en la moda. Como he mencionado antes, la moda es más que un hermoso vestido, la moda es también la fotografía, el arte, la historia, la calle, la música y la cultura en general. También te recomiendo estas ciudades ya que ellas organizan eventos relacionados con la moda que atienden un especifico mercado como el Bread and Butter en Berlin, el Exposhow de Cali o la Semana de moda nupcial de Barcelona.
El internet el mejor medio de información
Si mudarse a una capital de la moda o a una ciudad de gran movimiento cultural no es una opción para ti, no te preocupes, el internet es la solución perfecta para ti. Hoy en día, con el internet puedes obtener la mejor educación posible desde tu casa. Yo sé de esto ya que soy profesora en línea para Parsons School of Design. ¡Mis estudiantes viven alrededor de todo el mundo! Ellos tienen la oportunidad de aprender de mi experiencia en la moda en Milán y NYC sin tener que mudarse a las dos ciudades (en la 2 parte de este artículo hablaré más sobre cursos y universidades). También con el internet puedes incrementar tu cultura en general, ya que puedes leer revistas como style.com, puedes buscar información en sitios como Google y Wikipedia, te puedes subscribir a diferentes blogs que tratan temas como estilo de vida, moda, diseño ect. También puedes establecer una red de contactos en la moda a través de redes sociales como facebook, twitter, asmallworld, linkedin, quora u otros. El internet tiene mucho que ofrecer y depende de ti aprovecharlo!
